The Burnside Ridges consist of three roughly parallel mountain ridges with northeast-southwest orientation on the Oates coast in the north of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . As the northern end of the Lasarew Mountains , they reach with their northeastern foothills to the Matusevich glacier .
The first aerial photographs were taken during the US operation Highjump (1946–1947). The Australian polar explorer Phillip Law sketched and photographed the formation on February 20, 1959 from aboard the research vessel Magga Dan during a voyage as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE). The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia (ANCA) named the ridges after Lieutenant Commander Ian Malcolm Burnside (1925-2006) of the Royal Australian Navy , hydrograph on the Magga Dan on this trip.
