Burt Shavitz (born May 15, 1935 in Great Neck , New York , † July 5, 2015 in Bangor , Maine ), actually Ingram Berg Shavitz , was an American dropout , beekeeper and temporary entrepreneur .

Life

Shavitz was born to a Jewish family and grew up in Great Neck. He changed his name at the age of 18 when he graduated from high school. About his early professional life it is mainly reported that he worked as a freelance press photographer in the 1960s . a. Malcolm X and John F. Kennedy were photographed.

In 1970 he came across an abandoned swarm of bees while on a road trip. Since shortly before he had received the necessary tools of a beekeeper except for bees, he interpreted this as a “sign of God”. Then he lived the life of a dropout and sold his honey on the roadside, where he came across the artist Roxanne Quimby in 1984. At his suggestion, she formed candles from unneeded candle wax, the sale of which at a craft fair laid the foundation for the later jointly founded company, Burt's Bees , which Shavitz gave its name.

In the mid-1990s , Quimby bought the shares of her partner Shavitz, developed the company further and sold it with a profit of millions. Shavitz, meanwhile, lived a withdrawn life as a dropout. In 2014 the documentary Burt’s Buzz was released , which focuses on his life story as a beekeeper and entrepreneur and his story with "Burt's Bees". He died a year later due to respiratory problems .
