The term business moderation was coined by the German educator Josef W. Seifert in the 1980s. In contrast to the moderation of entertainment programs on radio and television , the so-called talk shows , it describes the moderation of workshops as part of change management, for example according to the open space approach or the moderation cycle . This differentiation of terms created a term equivalent in German for the "moderator", known in English as the facilitator .

Lukas Rütten defines the role of the business moderator or facilitator based on Roger Schwarz as "an external person who supports a team through dialogue and the pursuit of clarity in achieving its goals with a suitable process and a suitable structure.
