Maximilian Roth

Maximilian Roth (* 1899 in Wurz , Upper Palatinate ; † April 29, 1945 in Munich ) was a German sergeant major and company interpreter who took part in the Bavarian freedom campaign towards the end of World War II .

Life

Maximilian Roth was a member of the interpreting company in Military District VII. The company was considered more cosmopolitan and educated than other military units, which made it a nucleus of the resistance in Munich . Towards the end of World War II and Maximilian Roth participated in the Freedom Action Bavaria under the leadership of Captain Rupprecht Gerngross part that shortly before taking Munich by the US Army by a fall of the Nazis should prepare a quick and bloodless surrender of the city the way. The action was put down by the SS . After his arrest on April 29, 1945, a court martial sentenced him to death for high treason and mutiny . The same day, Roth was in the basement of Gauleiterbunkers in the central Ministry, now the Bavarian Ministry of Agriculture , shot . Also found Günther Caracciola Delbrück , Harald Dohrn , Hans Scharrer and Hans Quecke death.

The Münchner Freiheit square in the Schwabing district of Munich, named after the campaign, and a memorial plaque in the inner courtyard of the Ministry of Agriculture honor the members of the Bavarian freedom campaign for their resistance.
