Jimmy Voytek

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jim "Jimmy" Voytek (born March 24, 1938 in Miami , Florida ; † May 1980 ) was an American country and rockabilly musician.

Life

Jim Voytek began his career in the mid-1950s, along with other young musicians such as Kent Westberry and Charlie McCoy, as a member of the Old South Jamborees , which was broadcast from Miami on WMIL. On January 11, 1957 Voytek played together with Ray Pate and the Rhythm Rockets in the opening act of Carl Perkins , who had a guest appearance on the Jamboree. At the same time he made his first demo recordings of songs like Sweetest Gal in Town .

In 1959 and 1960, while Voytek was working at an RCA Victor office, he recorded two singles for two local labels, but they missed the charts. He then gave up his music career and worked as a police officer in Miami until 1976.

In 1976 he left Miami and tried his hand at country music in Nashville , Tennessee , and later founded his own label, Autumn Hill Records. However, Voytek suffered a heart attack in 1980 that ended his career at the age of only 42.

A year after his death, a large part of Voytek's recordings were re-released on the AFS Records label on the sampler Miami Rockabilly, Volume 3 .
