Butiama is a district of the Mara region in northwestern Tanzania with the administrative center in the city of Butiama . The district is bordered to the north by the Musoma District (Musoma City Council), Lake Victoria and the Rorya District , to the northeast by the Tarime district , to the east by the Serengeti district , to the south by the Bunda district and to the west by the district Musoma (Council Musoma Land) and to Lake Victoria.

The district has an area of ​​2257 square kilometers and around 240,000 inhabitants (as of 2012). Topographically, the country can be divided into three zones:

  • The coastal strip on Lake Victoria in the northwest. The land rises gently from the lake surface at 1130 meters above sea level and is traversed by several small rivers and streams that flow into Lake Victoria.
  • the valley of the Mara river to the north. The river forms the border with the Rorya district, the valley is wide and swampy.
  • The hill zone: From Lake Victoria to the east and from the Mara River to the south, the land rises gently, the highest peaks are over 1700 meters high.

The climate is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification . There are two rainy seasons , one from October to December and the second from March to May. The annual average rain falls over 1000 millimeters, the temperatures are between 24 and 32 degrees Celsius.

The population increased from 193,410 in 2002 to 241,732 in 2012, which corresponds to an annual growth of two percent. In 2012, 63 percent of the population spoke Swahili, eight percent spoke English and Swahili, and 28 percent were illiterate.

Facilities and services

  • Education: The district is home to the Julius K. Nyerere Public University of Agriculture and Technology.
  • Water: In 2002, less than half of the population had access to safe and clean water. In October 2019, a government-funded project was started to supply the Butiama districts with safe and clean water from Lake Victoria.

Economy and Infrastructure

The main industries in Butiama are agriculture, fishing and mining.

  • Agriculture: In rural areas, 98 percent of households are engaged in agriculture, in urban areas two percent. The most common crops are corn, potatoes and sweet potatoes. Almost all farmers also keep farm animals, especially poultry and goats (as of 2012).
  • Fisheries: The number of fishermen and fishing vessels increased over decades, reaching a high of 109,000 fishermen and 32,000 fishing vessels across Lake Victoria in 2016. In contrast, the catch per unit of effort fell continuously, which is a sign of overfishing.
  • Mining: The company CATA Mining started building a gold mine in Butiama in 2015 and mined the first gold in 2016. In 2020, 400 people were employed in the mine.

  • Lake Victoria: At 69,484 square kilometers, Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa and the second largest lake on earth. It is 1134 meters above sea level and is relatively shallow with a maximum depth of 82 meters.
