Musoma is a district of the Mara region in northwestern Tanzania with the administrative center in the city of Musoma . The district borders in the east on the district Butiama , in the south on the district Bunda and in the west and north on Lake Victoria .
geography
The district has a size of 4910 square kilometers, of which 300 square kilometers are accounted for by Lake Victoria, and around 30,000 inhabitants (as of 2012). Musoma consists of two non-contiguous areas, the Musoma City Council, which includes the capital of the region on Lake Victoria, and the Musoma Land Council. This is on a peninsula further to the southwest, separated by the Butiama district. The area lies at an altitude of 1130 meters, the surface of Lake Victoria, and 1500 meters above sea level. The climate in Musoma is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification . The annual average precipitation falls 920 millimeters, mostly in the months October to May. From June to September it hardly rains more than 10 millimeters per month. The average temperature is 23.1 degrees Celsius, the warmest is in October with 23.8 degrees, and the coolest in July with 22.1 degrees Celsius.

Musoma became an independent district in 1972, and in 2013 the Butiama district was split off from Musoma.

In 2012, around two thirds of those over five spoke Swahili , and in the city almost a quarter spoke English and Swahili. In rural areas, the illiteracy rate was 26 percent, significantly higher than in urban areas, at 13 percent. |

Facilities and services
- Education: In 2011 there were 41 primary schools in the City Council and 154 primary schools in the Land Council, six of the municipal schools were privately run. There were a total of 59 secondary schools and seven colleges.
- Health: There is a health center and 25 pharmacies in the district (as of 2015).
Economy and Infrastructure
Agriculture and fishing are the main industries, employing 96 percent of the population.
- Agriculture: Ninety percent of the households in the Land Council and thirty percent in the City Council are engaged in agriculture. Two thirds of households in rural areas and one fifth in urban areas also kept livestock. Chickens and goats were mainly bred (as of 2012).

- Roads: The district has 100 kilometers of trunk roads, 200 kilometers of regional roads, 250 kilometers of district roads and 300 kilometers of access roads. Most roads are gravel or dirt roads, so that they are often impassable when it rains.
Attractions
- Lake Victoria: Lake Victoria is the second largest freshwater lake on earth. The lake has been threatened by overfishing and pollution since the end of the 20th century.
Others
- Musoma is the seat of a Roman Catholic bishop . The diocese includes the districts of Musoma, Tarime, Butiama, Rorya and Serengeti and consists of 34 parishes. Of the 1.5 million inhabitants, 22 percent were Roman Catholic (as of 2017).
