Butler Island is an icy and round island with a diameter of 10 km off the Black Coast of the Palmerland in the southern part of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located 11 km east of the Merz Peninsula .
It was discovered and photographed from the air in December 1940 during the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941). Further aerial photographs were taken in 1947 during the American Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition , whose participants also carried out on-site measurements in cooperation with the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS). The FIDS named the island after Kenelm Somerset Priaulx Pierce Butler (1917-1995), head of the 11-strong FIDS team on Base E in Marguerite Bay from 1947 to 1948.
