history

Butting was founded in Crossen on the Oder in 1777 as a coppersmith. Under Hermann Butting, the craft business became an industrial enterprise in 1890. Since the original company headquarters was in the eastern parts of the German Reich , it had to be abandoned due to the Second World War and its aftermath. The company was rebuilt in Knesebeck in 1945 . In 1949 pipe production started with 16 employees. By 1960 the workforce had grown to 120 employees, in 1970 it was more than twice as large with 300 employees.

Shortly after German reunification , a second location was established in Schwedt / Oder in 1991 . The family company has been managed by Hermann Butting in the seventh generation since 2000. In 2003 the number of 1,000 employees was exceeded. In 2004, Butting China was founded in Tieling as the first foreign location, followed by Butting Canada in Calgary the following year . Butting Brasil was added in 2009 .

In 2017, the Butting Group took over the Sosta production site in Könnern and runs the new company under Sosta stainless pipes GmbH . In 2019, two more companies were founded in China: Butting International Engineering (Hong Kong) and Butting Engineering management (Beijing).

Thanks to the new locations, the workforce was again significantly increased; in January 2020 it was around 1,900 employees.
