Butwehl ( North Frisian : Bütweel , Danish : Buthvel ) was a Hallig in North Frisia . Today the area is part of the Hallig Langeneß .

history

Butwehl was created in 1362, like all parts of today's Hallig Langeneß, by the Second Marcellus Flood , when the former coastal landscape of Strand in what was then Uthlanden was partially destroyed. Until 1869, the Hallig grew together with the Hallig Langeneß and the Hallig Nordmarsch immediately to the west of it through dam construction, Lahnungen and natural growth . The original name of the island that has grown together was Nordmarsch-Langeness.

The former Hallig Butwehl was never a separate municipality. It originally belonged to the municipality of Gröde , and since 1666 to the municipality of Langeneß.

Butwehl also belonged to the parish Gröde (and the original Langeneß to parish Oland), built its own church community for Langeneß and Butwehl to 1725th

Surname

The name is derived from the North Frisian bütj weel (outside a Wehle) (cf. Wehle , nordfr. Weel , Danish hvel ).

geography

With a length of 2300 meters and a maximum width of 800 meters, the area is around 1.3 km². Butwehl is still separated from the actual Hallig Langeneß by the Priel Weehl or Große Wehl ( Westerwehl and Osterwehl ), which today is only four meters wide over long stretches.

For the census of May 25, 1987, the population of the three terps of the former Hallig Butwehl added up to 14 inhabitants:

  • Christianswarf (7 residents, 3 households)
  • Tadenswarf (6 residents, 4 households)
  • Tamenswarf (1)
