Buurtpoes Bledder (born around 2011 ; died on August 7, 2013 ) was a male house cat that went in and out of various shops in Leiden and was already a local celebrity there before being in the Netherlands through two reports in one newspaper and two Radio reports of her death as a summer potty became known. Buurtpoes Bledder was run over by a car on August 7, 2013.

biography

The tomcat was probably born in 2011, came to a student house in Hartesteeg in Leiden in spring 2012 and was christened Jacco there. After getting used to it, the little shy tomcat was allowed to move around freely in the neighborhood and began to visit various shops in Nieuwe Rijn, the historic city center of Leiden. He was a welcome guest at Café Jantje van Leiden, the jazz café De Twee Spieghel, the Bierwinkel Leiden and the Velvet record shop. Since the cat's name was not known, the shopkeepers had various nicknames for him, such as “Danger Cat”, “Chardonnay” or “Prinsje”.

In September 2012 an employee of Velvet set up a Facebook fan page for him and named the cat “Buurtpoes Bledder”. “Buurtpoes” ( IPA : ˈby: rtˌpʊs ) is Dutch for “neighborhood cat”, while “bledder” is a dialect expression from Leiden and has different meanings such as “ball” or “bald head” and referred to the black and white coat color of the cat. However, according to De Telegraaf , the meaning is controversial; possibly the name is an affectionate term for an annoying creature or a “pub tiger”.

The Facebook page developed its own momentum. There anecdotes from the life of Buurtpoes Bledder were collected. Among other things, according to Telegraaf , on October 26, 2012 the fire brigade had to rescue the cat from a roof after he had been "fished" out of the canal with an ice hockey stick the day before . The owners, 15 male students from Hartesteeg, found out about the popularity of their cat Jacco by chance. On August 7, 2013, Buurtpoes Bledder was hit by a car and killed. His death was reported in various Dutch media, including Leidsch Dagblad , Telegraaf and SBS 6 . A memorial place for the cat has been set up in front of Café Jantje van Leiden. The Leidsch Dagblad dedicated a cartoon to her and declared Buurtpoes the regional “word of the year”.

After the cat's death, the number of Facebook likes increased from 746 to 1,096 between August 2013 and September 2015 and decreased to 977 by January 2020.

On August 7, 2018, the commemoration of the five-year anniversary of death was reported on omroepwest.nl.
