Byblis liniflora is a carnivorous rainbow plant species fromthe rainbow plant family (Byblidaceae). It wasfirst describedin 1808 by Richard Anthony Salisbury , making it the oldest known species of the genus. It belongs to the annual, northern Australian Byblis species, which are collectively referred to as " Byblis liniflora complex"after it.

features

Byblis liniflora is an annual, usually unbranched, herbaceous plant, its roots are fine-grained. It grows upright and reaches a height of up to 15 centimeters.

leaves

The leaves are up to 8 centimeters long, oblong and round and taper towards the end, where they end in a small thickening. Young leaves are almost upright, but gradually droop with age. From the beginning to the end they are covered all around with stalked glands that secrete a sticky liquid and are used to catch and digest insects. In 2005 , after a long discussion, the carnivory of the plant was proven.

blossoms

Byblis liniflora , blooming

From some leaf axils , flower stalks grow above the base of the leaves , which hardly differ from the leaves. At their tips between January and May (in the Australian summer) terminal five-fold individual flowers bloom, but only a few at the same time.

The lanceolate sepals are up to 4 millimeters long, up to 1.3 millimeters wide and covered with glandular hairs. The inverted egg-shaped petals are light purple, 5 to 8 millimeters long, 3.5 millimeters wide and notched on the outer edge. The white stamens are up to 2 millimeters long. Like the pollen, the yellow anthers are 1.5 millimeters long. The anthers, which are shorter in relation to the stamen, are used as a diagnostic feature to differentiate from Byblis filifolia . The stylus is 3.5 millimeters long.

Fruits and seeds

The seed capsule, which is up to 4 millimeters long and 7 millimeters wide, is broadly egg-shaped and two-faced; when it dries out, it gradually tears open, so that the seeds it contains fall to the ground ( barochory ). The black, 0.7 to 0.9 millimeter long seeds are provided with a honeycomb relief.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24 or 32.

distribution

The species is found in Australia in the Northern Territory and in Western Australia . It grows in nutrient-poor sandy soils on the edge of seasonally moist areas.
