The Byrd firn field is a large firn field at the head of the Byrd Glacier in the Transantarctic Mountains . The New Zealand Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it after the American polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd (1888-1957) based on the naming of the glacier of the same name .
