The Càrn Mairg is a 1041 meter high mountain in Scotland . Its Gaelic name means hill of mourning or hill of the dead . The mountain is the highest in a group of four Munros , which are shaped like a horseshoe open to the south, north of the small settlement of Invervar in Glen Lyon . The mountain group is also known as the Càrn Mairg Group after the highest peak or, due to the shape of the mountain, as the Glen Lyon Horseshoe .

The flat summit area of the Càrn Mairg

The Càrn Mairg is the only one of the four Munros to have a rocky summit structure made of quartzite , which forms a small summit plateau. The other three peaks and two pre- peaks of the Càrn Mairg classified as tops , on the other hand, have comparatively less prominent, flat summit plateaus consisting of grass and heather. One of the pre- peaks , the 1012-meter-high Meall Liath, is just under a kilometer to the east, separated from the main peak by a notch with a height of 955 meters. The 1004 meter high Meall a 'Bhàrr is about a kilometer to the west, between the Càrn Mairg and the neighboring Meall Garbh . While the Càrn Mairg, like the entire mountain group, slopes gently to the north to Loch Rannoch , it has steep grass slopes to the south and west, sloping into the Coire Chearcaill. To the northeast, the Gleann Mòr valley separates the mountain group from Schiehallion , about four kilometers away , and to the southeast is the Meall nan Aighean , which is also classified as Munro .

The Càrn Mairg is climbed by many mountain hikers as part of a crossing of all four Munros of the entire mountain group, an approximately 18 km long tour. The climb through Gleann Muilinn from the eastern village of Fortingall near the north end of Loch Tay is around 20 km .
