Cápac Yupanqui

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cápac Yupanqui , Qhapaq Yupanki according to the Peruvian Quechua spelling , was the fifth ruler (Sinchi) of the Kingdom of Qusqu ( Cusco ) (around the year 1320 ).

Qhapaq Yupanki was the first Sinchi to secure Inca rule over the entire city of Qusqu, and he was the first to conquer neighboring towns, namely Kuyumarka (Cuyumarca) and Antamarka (Andamarca). His wife Mama Curihilpay (Qurihillpay) was a daughter of the chief of the Anta, who also lived in Qusqu and had previously been enemies with the Incas. With her he had the son Quispe Yupanqui (Qispi Yupanki) as the intended heir to the throne . Qhapaq Yupanki was the last Sinchi of Urin Qusqu (Sub-Cuzco), because after his death another son (and half-brother of Qispi Yupanki), Inca Roca , came to power. This was already part of Hanan Qusqu (Upper Cuzco), probably because his mother Cusi Chimbo (Kusi Chimpu) came from there.

Qhapaq means something like "ruler" or "warlord" in Quechua, while Yupanki can be associated with the verb yupay (to count, literally: "you count").
