César Geoffray

César Geoffray (born February 20, 1901 in Lyon , †  December 24, 1972 in Soucieu-en-Jarrest ) was a French choirmaster .

He was a co-founder of the Europa Cantat organization and founder of the French choir association À Cœur Joie and is considered an important renovator of the choral singing movement in France.

Geoffray grew up in Lyon and studied music at the local conservatory with Florent Schmitt and Augustin Savard . He later received a teaching position for harmony there and in 1940 founded the À Cœur Joie choir association, which is now internationally popular . In addition, Geoffray was involved in the French scout movement and in 1942 became the top director of the singing department.

In 1960 he worked with Gottfried Wolters to found Europa Cantat . Geoffray has also been appointed Special Envoy by the Ministry of Education.

Geoffray died in Soucieu-en-Jarrest near Lyon in 1972.
