The CCAAT / enhancer binding proteins (C / EBP) are a family of transcription factors that regulate the gene expression of enzymes of several metabolic pathways in vertebrates . There are six different C / EBPs in humans; they all bind to the nucleotide sequence CCAAT in the genome , which occurs in the promoter area of the respective regulated genes . The C / EBP are among the transcription factors with a bZIP domain .
C / EBPα is a central regulator of energy metabolism; Mice without C / EBPα show a dramatically altered metabolism with hypoglycaemia and a lack of adipose tissue.
C / EBPβ (LAP) is involved in the immune response and inflammation and is particularly expressed in T lymphocytes . It can both slow down and accelerate proliferation , and at the same time it exhibits tumor suppressor- like and proto-oncogene properties. In particular, C / EBPβ is necessary for the inhibitory effect of TGF-β on the expression of the proto-oncogene protein Myc and it regulates the expression of interleukin-6 .
Mice without C / EBPδ do not form any sodium lactate symporter transport proteins in their kidney cells . C / EBPε is involved in myelopoiesis , C / EBPγ regulates the expression of GCSF and C / EBPζ that of HSP70 .
