Cultural Commons Collecting Society
The Cultural Commons Collecting Society ( C3S ) is a European cooperative that aims to establish a European collecting society for musical content.
The sponsor is the Düsseldorf association OpenMusicContest.org. eV This saw the need for an alternative to the monopoly collecting society GEMA . Unlike there, the artists at C3S should have the opportunity to determine the license of individual titles themselves. This is to enable them to publish only part of their work as free works (e.g. under the Creative Commons license). The C3S is also intended to facilitate the commercial exploitation of works for artists that they have placed under the Creative Commons license but not released for commercial use.
Every musician should also have full voting rights and billing processes should run automatically.
The start-up financing of the project came from crowdfunding , which raised € 119,000. In addition, the project was positively assessed by a jury of experts in the innovation competition Digitales Medienland NRW and a funding recommendation of € 200,000 was given.
C3S was founded as a European cooperative in Hamburg on September 25, 2013 and entered in the cooperative register at the Düsseldorf District Court on March 28, 2014 . The application for admission to the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) should be submitted in the second half of 2016. The start was originally planned for 2016. The amendment to the Collecting Societies Act and the attempt to limit the influence of publishers resulted in a lengthy negotiation process with the DPMA regarding the design of the statutes, the new version of which was approved at the General Assembly in June 2019.
