CBC Radio Orchestra

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The CBC Radio Orchestra was until 2009 the radio orchestra of the public Canadian broadcaster CBC / Radio-Canada . It was the only one in all of North America . The last chief conductor (since 2006) was Alain Trudel . Well-known guest conductors are Raffi Armenian , Kees Bakels , Michel Corboz , Victor Feldbrill , Serge Garant , Monica Huggett , Milton Katims , Gary Kulesha , Sir Ernest MacMillan , Ettore Mazzoleni , Geoffrey Moull , Harry Newstone , Yannick Nézet-Séguin , Jaap Schröder , Georg Tintner , Owen Underhill , Heinz Unger and Jon Washburn .

By the early 1980s, CBC had separate orchestras in Halifax , Montreal , Toronto , Vancouver, and Winnipeg . But after drastic austerity measures by the federal government, only the CBC Vancouver Orchestra, founded in 1938, remained, which was elevated to the rank of national orchestra. To illustrate this status, it was given its current name in 2000.

The orchestra fell victim to austerity measures in 2008 and was dissolved on November 1, 2008. Conductor Alain Trudel then founded the privately financed National Broadcast Orchestra of Canada together with musicians from the CBC Radio Orchestra.
