Jaap Schröder

Jaap Schröder , also Jaap Schroeder (born December 31, 1925 in Amsterdam ; † January 1, 2020 there ) was a Dutch violinist and conductor .

Live and act

Jaap Schröder studied violin with Jos de Clerck between 1943 and 1947 , at the Conservatory in his hometown and then at the École Normale de Musique de Paris with Jacques Thibaud , Joseph Calvet and Jean Pasquier (1904–1992). He also studied musicology at the Paris Sorbonne . After completing his training, he was concertmaster with the Radio Hilversum Chamber Orchestra. At the same time, musicians friends suggested to him to found the “Nederlands Strijkkwartet” with them; With this string quartet he gave numerous concerts in Europe and North America. In 1960 he founded the ensemble “ Concerto Amsterdam ”, which he became director. The ensemble was converted into a baroque orchestra around 1969.

He pursued the career of a classical violinist for 17 years until he, meanwhile belonging to the circle of musicians around Frans Brüggen , Anner Bijlsma and Gustav Leonhardt , dealt intensively with the baroque violin and historical performance practice from the end of the 1960s . In 1973 he was invited to found a class for baroque violin at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis . In 1975 he founded the "Quartetto Esterházy", which until 1981 consisted of original instruments. In 1981 Christopher Hogwood appointed him concertmaster at the Academy of Ancient Music .

In 1982 he was appointed guest director of the newly founded "Smithsonian Chamber Players" in Washington for six years .

Jaap Schröder has taught at numerous music faculties at American universities, such as Yale University , Virginia and Maryland University, as well as at the Peabody Conservatory , the Banff School of the Arts and the Conservatory of Luxembourg City . He devoted himself intensively to the rediscovery of the forgotten violin literature of the 17th and 18th centuries. Schroeder was a regular guest conductor with leading chamber ensembles.

Schröder died the day after his 94th birthday.

Donation

After being a guest at the music festival that takes place annually in the small Icelandic town of Skálholt for 40 years , Schröder bequeathed his musical collection to the local cathedral in 2017. This forms the basis for a music library to be set up.
