European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization
The European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization , French: Comité Européen de Normalization Électrotechnique ( CENELEC ), English: European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization , is one of the three major standardization organizations in Europe .
CENELEC is responsible for European standardization in the field of electrical engineering ( ENEC marking ). Together with ETSI (standardization in the field of telecommunications ) and CEN (standardization in all other technical areas), CENELEC forms the European system for technical standards.
CENELEC was founded in 1973. Previously, two organizations were responsible for electrotechnical standardization: CENELCOM and CENEL. CENELEC is a non-profit organization under Belgian law with headquarters in Brussels . Therefore, the abbreviation "CENELEC" used in all member countries is formed from the French language version of the organization name. However, the lingua franca is English.
CENELEC members are the national electrotechnical committees of Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Hungary, the United Kingdom and Cyprus.
