CEPIC ( Center of the Picture Industry ) is a non-profit, international umbrella organization that represents the interests of 11 national, European picture agency associations and other individual agencies vis-à-vis EU institutions and other international organizations. Its seat is Berlin.

organization

At present, 883 picture agencies and around 50,000 picture authors who market their picture material through agencies are represented by CEPIC (as of 2010). The member agencies are mostly small and medium-sized companies, but also state museums and archives that represent professional photography and moving images from the press, culture and illustration department.

The CEPIC board, which is elected for 2 years by the representatives of the 11 national picture associations, consists of 7 members.

history

CEPIC is a registered European economic interest group (EWIV) and was founded in Berlin in 1993. It has its headquarters there to this day. In 1997, CEPIC was granted observer status at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). In 2006, CEPIC became a member of the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC). Since October 2009, the CEPIC has been called the Center of the Picture Industry . In previous years the organization appeared under the name Coordination of European Picture Agencies . The new name is intended to reflect the global orientation of the umbrella organization.

Goals and Activities

CEPIC promotes the exchange of information between image agencies from all over the world through an annual congress in changing European cities. There, experts speak and discuss image rights as well as the possibilities of keywording and online marketing. Further topics are the challenge of the new media , the situation of the image market and its constant changes as well as new technologies and footage .

According to its own opinion, the umbrella association advocates maintaining balanced market conditions. Sample contracts and guidelines for business relationships between photographers, picture agencies and picture users are regularly drawn up. CEPIC works together with ICOMP (Initiative for a Competitive Online Marketplace) especially to protect competitive market conditions in the online area.

Another central concern is the protection of intellectual property and the associated remuneration for picture authors. CEPIC advocates ethical standards and the rights of photographers and picture agencies. In 2009, CEPIC issued a critical statement on the US Google Book Settlement . The statement was submitted to the European Commission together with the following associations: ICOMP, the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels , the Internet Archive / Open Book Alliance and EBLIDA .

CEPIC is also in the discussion about the so-called "orphan works" ( orphan works active) and calls for a sector-specific solution. To prevent the creation of "orphan works", CEPIC advocates improving both legal and technological protection.

Since the laws on copyright vary from state to state, and trade barriers repeatedly develop from this, CEPIC advocates comparable trade regulations within the European Union.

Members

The number of picture agencies represented is 883 (as of September 2010). It arises primarily from the memberships of the national photo associations, but also from the free members, since there is not a superordinate interest group for the respective photo agencies and photo archives in every country.
