The Centro indígena de Capacitación Integral (CideCI; dt . : Indigenous Center for Integral Education ) is a non-profit organization based in San Cristóbal de las Casas in Chiapas ( Mexico ).

history

The institution was founded in 1989 as "CIDECI Las Casas". The addition "las Casas" comes from a bishop from Chiapas, the Bartolomé de Las Casas , who came to South America in 1502 and who is said to have treated the indigenous population with respect and supported them towards the Spanish crown. The CideCI is primarily dedicated to educating local youth from the surrounding communities, who are among the most marginalized in Mexico. In this way the autonomy of the local Mayan cultures is to be promoted. It offers training facilities for various professions on an area of around 20 hectares . The duration of the training is adapted to the needs of the trainees. It varies between three months and one and a half years and is geared to the practical and cultural needs of the communities. The trainees can come to the center for shorter, repetitive sections and, for example, stay away during the harvest season or stay for several months in order to graduate.

Learning environment and training opportunities

The CideCI offers workshops and courses that are geared towards different craft areas. The focus is on free and independent learning. It is part of the "Universidad de la Tierra" in Chiapas. In the institute there are several workshops, classrooms and event rooms, offices, kitchens, libraries and music rooms. The bedrooms are in wooden houses, some of which stand on pillars. In addition to greenhouses and composting plants, there are vegetable and herb beds, stables for keeping animals and their own beekeeping. These facilities serve both self-sufficiency and training, in which the teaching content can be applied in practice. For example, sustainable agriculture, forestry and animal breeding courses, carpentry, plumber, mechanic and leather processing courses are offered . There are web and hairdressing courses especially for young women . The young people are between 12 and 25 years old. On average, the institution is visited by around 800 to 900 participants each year.
