The CNA Center is an office building in Chicago . The building with a height of 183 meters was constructed between 1970 and 1972 and opened in 1973. The red paint earned the skyscraper the nickname Big Red and highlights the simple international-style building from the Chicago skyline. The CNA Center was built as the headquarters of the insurer CNA Financial and has been owned by real estate investor John Buck Company since 2015 . In 2018, CNA Financial moved its offices to a 35-story new building within Chicago, also called the CNA Center. The old CNA Center is expected to be renamed and the naming rights have been given to the new anchor tenant Northern Trust . The lighting behind the building windows often broadcasts messages on special occasions. Computers are used to calculate the necessary windows that need to be illuminated for the transmission of the correct message.
