The association for a national CO 2 tax , or CO 2 tax for short , is a national, non-profit and non-partisan association with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by introducing a national CO 2 tax. To this end, the association organizes events and lectures, awards research contracts and creates its own publications on the topic. Members can be natural persons as well as companies, associations and municipalities.

history

It was founded on March 27, 2017 in Freiburg im Breisgau , where the association also has its headquarters. In 2018, an additional office was opened in Berlin. The number of members is now over 900 (as of Jan. 2019), including around 110 companies, 21 clubs and associations and several municipalities, including Erlangen and Freiburg im Breisgau. Jörg Lange is the managing director. The advisory board is made up of Ursula Sladek , Bertram Späth, Joachim Nitsch , Martin Ufheil, Heinz Ulrich Brosziewski, Hartmut Brösamle, Thomas Jorberg and Stephan Lessenich .

positioning

The aim of the association is to introduce a national CO 2 tax without any exception. The levy is to be raised in a revenue-neutral manner by abolishing surcharges and energy taxes, above all the EEG surcharge and the electricity tax. With a suggested entry level of 40 euros per ton of CO 2, this would initially result in a slight relief for households. The level of the levy should then rise continuously to 190 euros per tonne of CO 2 in 2050. Your own positions and various scenarios are presented in an extensive discussion paper.

The association's suggestions were included in a presentation by the Scientific Services of the German Bundestag on possible models of a CO 2 tax for Germany.

activities

Various members of the association regularly give public lectures, take part in panel discussions or take part in technical discussions on the topic, including in April 2019 in the Bundestag's environmental committee. In spring 2019, the association, together with Germanwatch and the New Energy Foundation, commissioned a representative survey that asked about the public's opinion on CO 2 pricing. The association also regularly publishes statements, press releases and its own investigations, such as a fact check on the CDU's open response to Rezo's YouTube post of May 18, 2019.

On its website, the association provides a CO 2 tax calculator with which households and companies can estimate the effects of a CO 2 tax in comparison to the current energy taxes and surcharges.
