The vehicles with the numbers 260 to 267 of the Central South African Railways (CSAR) were tank locomotives with the wheel arrangement 2'C2 '.

The locomotives were procured in 1904 for passenger train service on the Springs - Randfontein line in Transvaal (today Gauteng ), where they replaced the machines of the former NZASM ( No. 61 to 255 ). The manufacturer was the Vulcan Foundry ; the design came from PA Hyde, chief engineer of the railway.

The locomotives had bar frames, internal Stephenson controls and flat slide valves above the cylinders. Many parts were interchangeable with the Class 9 also supplied by Vulcan . The 2'C2 'axle arrangement ensured good running properties in both directions of travel.

The eight locomotives were classified as class F by the South African Railways (SAR) and were given the numbers 78 to 85. With a total weight of 80 t, they were the heaviest and most powerful tank locomotives of the SAR, and the drive wheel diameter of 1,372 mm was the largest. The machines, which were painted black and decorated with red lines and brass-colored kettle rings, were always kept in perfect condition and affectionately referred to as chocolate boxes .

The last machines were taken out of service in 1931; no copy has survived.
