CSNET

The CSNET ( C omputer S cience Net work ) was an 1981 based computer network. It was initiated by the National Science Foundation . It is considered the forerunner of the National Science Foundation Network (NSFNET) and today's Internet .

By the end of 1986, over 165 universities, industry and government groups were affiliated with CSNET. Membership costs ranged from $ 2,000 for small computing establishments to $ 30,000 for large companies. There was free support for that.

The first email was sent to Germany via CSNET . It was sent on August 2, 1984 in Cambridge (Massachusetts) and reached the computing center of the University of Karlsruhe on August 3, 1984.
