Nikon 1 is a digital camera system with mirrorless digital cameras and interchangeable lenses from the Japanese manufacturer Nikon . On September 21, 2011, two camera variants were presented: The manufacturer's recommended retail price for the J1 kit was € 599 (now around € 660 adjusted for inflation) and € 869 for the V1 kit (around € 960 now adjusted for inflation) together with one 10 to 30 mm (equivalent to 27 to 81 mm small format) zoom lens .

Nikon discontinued the production of the Nikon 1 system cameras in 2017 and the offer in 2018.

Characteristics

Nikon 1 is the third digital camera system from Nikon and technically positions itself between DSLRs and compact cameras. A new bayonet and a new sensor were designed for the camera. The system has an electronic viewfinder without a mirror, but the lenses can still be swapped, just like with SLR cameras. Due to the small sensor format and thus the shorter focal length and the omission of the components for an optical viewfinder, these system cameras can be produced in a compact manner compared to DSLRs.

According to the manufacturer, the cameras should have a short shutter release delay and can record up to 60 images per second. The first camera bodies had a sensor with 10.1 megapixels, the newer models V2, J3 and AW1 a sensor with 14.2 megapixels, the V3 and J4 a sensor with 18.4 megapixels and the J5 a sensor with 20.8 megapixels.

So far, four model series have been launched:

  • S-series (Nikon 1 S1, S2)
  • J-series (Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4, J5)
  • V series ( Nikon 1 V1 , V2, V3)
  • AW series (Nikon 1 AW1)

The S and J series have no electronic viewfinder and no hot shoe, but a flash is integrated. The S series is the most compact variant. The V series is the series of cameras with an electronic viewfinder and hot shoe, the V2 also has an integrated flash, and the V3 has an optional clip-on viewfinder.

The AW series is a series of waterproof (up to 15 meters diving depth), particularly shock-resistant and cold-resistant cameras for outdoor and underwater photography . It was presented on Sept. 19, 2013 along with two associated waterproof and shock-resistant AW lenses.

Recording modes

In addition to photography with a motif automatic, programmed AE , shutter priority , time automatic and manual control (P / S / A / M) is the inclusion of HD video possible. There is also a special feature called "moving snapshot", which records a short video film in slow motion, as well as a "Smart Photo Selector" mode, which selects from a series of 20 images that are recorded before, during and after the shutter button is pressed. Automatically selects 5 individual shots from which the user can ultimately choose the best one for him.

Autofocus system

A hybrid autofocus system is used in the Nikon 1 system . It automatically switches between an autofocus system with phase detection and 73 measuring areas and an AF system with contrast detection and 135 measuring areas (V3: 105 or 171 focus areas). A single AF (AF-S) and a continuous focus tracking (AF-C) are available.

Many Nikon 1 lenses have a zoom but no focus ring. However, manual focusing is still possible using controls on the camera.

CX format

Nikon's 1 series has its own bayonet with a diameter of 39.8 mm, which is smaller than the previous F bayonet . Nikon calls the new sensor format the CX format . Nikon's name "1-series" is derived from the external dimensions of the sensor (not its effective image diagonal), defined according to the traditional measuring method of the nominal size of image sensors based on the size of the corresponding vacuum image recording tube, specified as the diameter of the corresponding tube in inches. In the case of a one-inch image sensor, the image size corresponds to the size of the image which can be displayed on the light-sensitive surface of an image recording tube with an outer diameter of 1 inch. Typically, the diameter of the usable area in such tubes was about two thirds of the outer diameter, which explains the sensor dimensions. The sensor has an aspect ratio of 3: 2 and measures 13.2 mm × 8.8 mm (116 mm² or 13.4 percent of the small image size) and 15.9 mm on the diagonal. The format factor relative to the 35mm format is 2.73 and the depth of field is larger by this factor compared to the 35mm format with the same aperture number and the same angle of view. The normal focal length of the CX format is smaller by the form factor compared to the 35mm format and is nominally 18.3 mm; the normal lens offered by Nikon has a focal length of 18.5 mm.

The sensor is therefore smaller than the sensor of Micro Four Thirds and APS-C / DX cameras, but larger than that of many other digital compact cameras.

Lenses

1 Nikkor lenses

Lenses for the Nikon 1 system are labeled 1 Nikkor .

The following lenses have so far been introduced for the Nikon 1 system:

  • 1 Nikkor VR 6.7-13mm f / 3.5-5.6 (wide-angle zoom)
  • 1 Nikkor 10mm f / 2.8 (wide angle pancake lens)
  • 1 Nikkor AW 10mm f / 2.8 (waterproof wide-angle lens for the AW series)
  • 1 Nikkor VR 10-30mm f / 3.5-5.6 (standard zoom)
  • 1 Nikkor VR 10–30 mm 1: 3.5–5.6 PD-ZOOM (standard zoom with zoom motor especially for video recordings)
  • 1 Nikkor VR 10-100mm f / 4.0-5.6 (super zoom)
  • 1 Nikkor VR 10–100 mm f / 4.5–5.6 PD-ZOOM (super zoom with zoom motor especially for video recordings)
  • 1 Nikkor 11-27.5mm f / 3.5-5.6 (standard zoom)
  • 1 Nikkor AW 11-27.5mm f / 3.5-5.6 (standard waterproof zoom for the AW series)
  • 1 Nikkor 18.5mm f / 1.8 ( normal lens )
  • 1 Nikkor VR 30-110mm f / 3.8-5.6 (telephoto zoom)
  • 1 Nikkor 32 mm 1: 1.2 (fast, short telephoto focal length)
  • 1 Nikkor VR 70-300mm f / 4.5-5.6 (super telephoto lens)

The AW lenses are only compatible with AW series cameras, while the normal 1 Nikkor lenses can be connected to all cameras.

Nikkor lenses

Using the FT1 adapter produced by Nikon, many lenses for the F bayonet can be connected to Nikon 1 cameras. Lenses with a built-in focus motor (AF-I / AF-S) usually also have an autofocus on the Nikon 1, with single AF (AF-S) and, more recently, continuous AF focus tracking (AF-C) using can be. Only the middle autofocus field can be used with F lenses. The VR function can be used, but the VR is permanently active and does not go to sleep, for example when displaying images. Since the sensor with Crop 2.7 is significantly smaller than a DX (Crop 1.5) or FX sensor (Crop 1.0), a very large part of the lens is not used at all. In fact, only 13% (= 100 / 2.7 / 2.7) of the image field that a camera with an FX sensor uses.

System accessories

A new multi-accessory connector was developed for the camera system, with which the V series cameras are equipped. It can accommodate special small Nikon 1 system flashes , an external microphone or a GPS receiver. An electronic viewfinder can be connected to the multi-accessory port on the V3 . Use of system accessories from the rest of the accessories program such as B. Nikon system flashes or direct use of studio flash systems is not possible.

Other accessories include an infrared remote release, a WLAN module for data transmission and control of the camera as well as various underwater housings.

End of system

Nikon discontinued the production of the Nikon 1 system cameras in 2017. In July 2017 there were only stocks of the 1 J5. 1 AW1 and 1 V3 were sold out. Successor models were not announced. Jan-Markus Rupprecht from Digitalkamera.de says: "This is actually the end of the previous mirrorless camera system from Nikon."
