Cañadón Peñas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cañadón Peñas is a " Millennium Village " in Bolivia , which is supported by German World Hunger Aid together with another fourteen Millennium Villages worldwide .

location

Cañadón Peñas, the Peñas Valley ( cañadón = field in the valley that is flooded when it rains; peña = rock, mountain ), is the name for the amalgamation of communities from the two Bolivian districts ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Pazña and Antequera in the Poopó province in the Oruro department . The project area extends above Pazña along the floodplains of the Río Antequera and the Río Urmiri .

requirements

Mining in the region, which mainly produces lead , zinc and silver , has been on the decline for decades, the deposits are depleted and the production systems are out of date. Agriculture is therefore more and more the only source of income for the impoverished population, a difficult situation with the climatic conditions of the valley at an altitude of almost 4000 m: During the day the sun burns down from the sky, the nights bring frost temperatures again and again, even in summer, so that in the event of extreme drought, the fields are depleted and harvests are sparse.

Project goals

In joint workshops, the inhabitants of the Peñas Valley and experts from Welthungerhilfe have drawn up a five-year plan that aims to implement improvements in four areas:

  • nutrition
  • economy
  • education
  • Women have a say

Welthungerhilfe supports the 13,000 rural residents in the region in improving livestock farming, setting up small cheese dairies and setting up schools with lunch.
