The Café Ritter is a traditional Viennese coffee house in the 6th Viennese district Mariahilf at the address Mariahilfer Strasse 73 at the corner of Amerlingstrasse. The struggle for survival of the listed coffeehouse, which opened in 1905, aroused great media interest in 2009 and 2010.

history

The original Café Ritter was located in Palais Kaunitz on the corner of Amerlingstrasse and Gumpendorfer Strasse since 1867 . In 1887 it moved to the nearby current location.

An eviction action by the new home owner, the Riha private foundation of the Hrachowina family, had been pending against the traditional company since 2008 . Café Ritter had to file for bankruptcy in July 2009 . The main reason for the economic failure was the payment arrears due to a nine-fold rent increase, which the homeowner requested retrospectively for five years after the failure to report the death of one of the co-owners of the café became known.

Trustee lawyer Walter Kainz, a restaurateur himself, tried to save the popular café and in a public bidding process found new operators who are responsible for the rental debts and the inventory (together 600,000 euros). With the repayment of the rental debt, the eviction action is usually dismissed and the buyer can enter into the existing rental agreement. The house owner's plan to leave the premises of Café Ritter to a textile retail chain to maximize profit was thwarted by the recently decreed monument protection for the traditional restaurant.

At the beginning of March 2010, restaurateur Harald Holzer took over Café Ritter.
