A Jewish community in Vantoux in the Moselle department in the French region of Lorraine was established by the 18th century at the latest.

history

The Jewish community had 35 families at the end of the 18th century. In 1830 there were already 211 people with a total population of 450. Most of the Jews lived as butchers and the building of the former Jewish slaughterhouse has been preserved and is used for events. The Jewish community had belonged to the Israelite consistorial district of Metz since 1808 .

synagogue

In 1777 a synagogue was built together with the Jewish residents of Vallières and Mey , on a piece of land that the landlord provided free of charge. The synagogue was on the way through the vineyards towards Mey. A new synagogue was built in the 19th century and was used for worship until 1929 . The building is still there and some architectural elements, such as three round windows, are reminiscent of the former purpose of the building.

graveyard

The first burial in Vantoux's Jewish cemetery took place in 1734.
