A Jewish Community in Grosbliederstroff in the Moselle department in the French region of Lorraine existed since the late 17th century.

history

In 1690 there is evidence of a Lévy family who came from the Electoral Palatinate . In 1753 a second family was allowed to settle in the village. At the beginning of the 20th century, Jewish families from Créhange , Loupershouse and Langensoultzbach moved here . Likewise , Jewish families moved to Grosbliederstroff from the neighboring village of Rouhling , where there is a Jewish cemetery . The Jewish community has belonged to the Israelite consistorial district of Metz since 1808 .

synagogue

On the first cadastral plan from 1811, a synagogue is already drawn, which was located behind the house of the merchant Mendel Salomon, at today's 28 and 30, rue de la Liberté. This synagogue became too small for the increasing number of parishioners. In 1835 there were about 227, and that year the Jewish community began building a new synagogue.

The synagogue was badly damaged by artillery hits in 1944/45 and therefore had to be completely renovated after 1945. Significant changes were made. B. the interior space is reduced to a third of the area and the space gained is used to build an apartment. The first service after the war took place on June 19, 1949 .

On the lintel is a marble plaque with the Hebrew inscription: Here is the gate of the Eternal, the righteous will pass through it ( Psalm 118, 20).

Ritual bath

A ritual bath ( mikveh ) was located between the old synagogue and the house of Mendel Solomon. It was fed by rainwater and a water pipe.

school

In 1836 the Jewish community bought a piece of land next to the synagogue and built a school building with two apartments, one for the teacher and the other for the ministre officiant . After the Second World War , this house was sold by the municipality.
