Synagogue in Boulay

A Jewish community in Boulay-Moselle in the Moselle department in the French region of Lorraine has existed since the 17th century.

history

In 1670 the Jewish community of Boulay-Moselle built the first synagogue , which was replaced by a new building on Rue du Four Banal in 1730. Finally, a larger synagogue in neo-Romanesque style was built for the growing community in 1854 on Rue des Juifs ( Judengasse ) , which was destroyed by the German occupiers in 1940. The survivors of National Socialist persecution, some of whom had returned from deportation , built a new synagogue in 1950 on Rue du Pressoir. The Jewish community has belonged to the Israelite consistorial district of Metz since 1808 .

graveyards

The first Jewish cemetery in Boulay was established next to the Catholic parish garden in 1732, which led to disputes with the pastor. The second Jewish cemetery was created on the road to Sarrelouis in the middle of the 18th century. The third Jewish cemetery was built on Route de Macker and was desecrated by the German occupiers in 1940 .
