Forbach Jewish community
A Jewish community in Forbach in the Moselle department in the French region of Lorraine had existed since the 18th century at the latest.
history
In Forbach, four Jewish families are named in 1723 and nine in 1753 , who paid taxes. In the 19th century their number grew so that in 1834 314 Jewish residents, ie 10% of the population, belonged to the Jewish community. After the Jewish community of Metz , this was the second largest Jewish community in the Moselle department. From 1834 a synagogue was built on avenue Saint-Remy , which had to be renovated in 1862/63. After it was destroyed by the German occupiers during the Second World War , it was rebuilt identically by the Jewish community after 1945.
