Donnelay Jewish Community

A Jewish community in Donnelay in the Moselle department in the French region of Lorraine existed since the 18th century.

history

Even before the French Revolution there were Jewish families in the village. In 1840 there were 71 Jewish residents in the village and after 1871, as in most rural areas, their number decreased due to emigration to the neighboring cities. The Jewish community of Donnelay employed a teacher and a cantor . From 1808 the Jewish community belonged to the Israelite consistorial district of Metz .

Lazare Lévy

The village of Donnelay was the first place in France with a Jewish mayor. From 1800 the merchant Lazare Lévy led the community. In 1806 he took part in the Sanhedrin convened by Napoleon .
