Cairns Church
The Cairns Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Milngavie in East Dunbartonshire . It is at the junction between Cairns Drive and Buchanan Street north of the city center. In 1976 Cairns Church was included in the Scottish Monument Lists in Category B. The church is still in use as such today.
history
In 1787 an application for the construction of a church building was granted by the Council of Elders of the Relief Church in Glasgow . In Milngavie there was no church building up to that point and services were held outdoors. At first there were problems with the church construction and a shell construction that had been started was abandoned for legal reasons. The New Kilpatrick Relief Church was finally completed in 1799. After several internal church mergers, a new church building became necessary at the end of the 19th century. Cairns Church was completed in 1903. Its name is derived from John Cairns , the director of UP Divinity College . Following its merger with the Church of Scotland in 1929, Cairns Church became the Parish Church of the Parish . In 1957 a community hall was added. A major renovation was carried out in 2000.
description
Cairns Church is located in a residential area north of the city center. As an architect, John Bennie Wilson was responsible for the planning. The striking sandstone building is in an elevated position. Unusually, the roofs were covered in two different colors. While a red tile roof was chosen for the square bell tower, the church is covered with gray-green slate shingles.
