The Calhoun Street Bridge , also called Trenton City Bridge , is a truss bridge over the Delaware River between Morrisville in Pennsylvania and Trenton in New Jersey . It takes its name from the connection between Calhoun Street in Trenton and East Trenton Avenue in Morrisville. The two-lane road bridge was part of the Lincoln Highway until 1920 , when it was moved downstream to the Lower Trenton Bridge . The bridge is operated by the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission and had an average of 17,400 vehicles daily in 2016. It is not subject to a toll , but its use is restricted for vehicles up to 3 tons.
The wrought iron truss bridge built by the Phoenix Bridge Company of Phoenixville in 1884 is the only remaining bridge of its kind over the Delaware River. It consists of seven bridge segments designed in the Pratt construction method, with a total length of 388 meters. A wooden bridge had been on the six pillars since 1861 , which fell victim to a devastating fire on June 25, 1884; the new construction of today's iron bridge was inaugurated on October 20, 1884. After over 125 years of operation, it was extensively renovated in 2010. The substructure, the roadway and the access roads as well as the paint were renewed. The measures were honored with the Historic Preservation Award of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection in 2011 .
The Calhoun Street Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 (NRHP #: 75001621).
