beacon on the island of Aruba . It stands on the Hudishibana plateau from the time of the first Indian settlers.
The California Lighthouse is ahistory
The lighthouse was designed in 1910 by a French architect and built between 1914 and 1916 using local stone in the Noord settlement area on the north-western tip of the island.
The structure is approximately 30 meters (98 feet ) high and the lamp house is 7.5 meters (25 feet) in diameter. The lighthouse was named after the steamship California , which sank off the coast on September 23, 1891. The first lighthouse keeper was Jacob Jacobs of Curacao , the last Federico Fingal of Aruba. They did their job from the building that today serves as the La Trattoria El Faro Blanco restaurant (German: Restaurant at the White Lighthouse ). In 1970 the operation of the beacon was converted to electricity and automated.
The lighthouse is surrounded by the Hudishibana sand dunes . In 2011 the tower was given a new coat of paint. It originally had a white exterior plaster and was also known as Faro Blanco . It is a sight and as the island's landmark it is a popular excursion point for car safaris for tourists.
In 2015, the Grade I listed building was transferred to the Monuments Fund Aruba , who had it renovated. Upon completion, the lighthouse was officially reopened on August 26, 2016 after being closed for many years. Tourists have been able to climb it again since September 5, 2016.
