The cherry sawfly ( Caliroa cerasi ) is a plant wasp from the family of the true sawfly (Tenthredinidae). In English, the species bears the name pear slug (" pear slug ") based on one of its main host plants and the appearance of the larvae .

features

The adult sawfly are 4–6 mm long. The adults have a black basic color. The wings have a dark wing mark . The larvae reach a body length of 11 mm. The yellow larvae are usually covered with a dark layer of mucus that protects them from predators. The head is at the wider end.

distribution

The species is native to the western Palearctic . It is widespread in Europe. It was introduced to other continents. In North America (USA and Canada) the cherry wasp is now also widespread.

Way of life

The wasps can be found on various rose plants ( Rosaceae ) such as sour cherries , rock pears , mountain ash or hawthorn . The species usually forms two generations per year. The cherry sawfly overwinters as a larva in the ground. The larvae pupate in spring. The adults can be observed between mid-May and the end of July. The insects reproduce parthenogenetically . Male cherry wasps are very rare. The adult plant wasps lay their eggs on the underside of the leaves of the host plants in so-called egg pockets. To do this, they cut slits in the leaf with their laying spike. The hatched larvae usually stay on the upper side of the leaf. They usually eat the leaves down to the leaf veins.
