history
The city was founded on the area of the former Buffelsvlei farm . This was built by the Calitz family (as namesake) and officially mentioned for the first time in 1821. In 1845 the construction of the parish hall began.
In 1924 it was connected to the railway, in 1937 electrification and the construction of a paved road to Oudtshoorn.
At the end of the 1990s, the place became known in Europe through a dispute with the EU . The reason was the designation of the southern wine produced there as port wine . As a transitional arrangement, the term port wine was allowed to be used on the South African domestic market until 2011.
