Like its homolog calreticulin, calnexin is a lectin of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Calnexin can already be found in the simplest eukaryotes . It is one of the chaperones .

It is membrane-bound (in contrast to soluble calreticulin). The activity of both proteins depends on calcium ions, which are present in high concentrations in the ER . Calnexin and calreticulin both recognize certain sugar residues from incompletely folded proteins and support them in their folding process .
