Calumma boettgeri is a relatively small chameleon that is endemic , i.e. exclusively, on the island of Madagascar and an offshore island. Males and females both reach a length of about 13 cm. The species wasdiscoveredby George Albert Boulenger in 1888.

habitat

Distribution area

C. boettgeri prefers to live in the outskirts of the rainforest of Madagascar and the island of Nosy Be at a height of about 0.3 to 4 meters on trees and bushes.

features

This species of chameleon has an elongated, flattened and narrow body. The snout of the animals is reminiscent of a nose, as there is a snout attachment there. The occipital lobes have grown together at the head end . The coloring includes three main colors. With inconspicuous green, brown and yellow tones, C. boettgeri can adapt perfectly to its surroundings.

attitude

These chameleons react relatively aggressively towards their fellow species. Individual keeping is therefore recommended in the terrarium.

The terrarium should be designed as follows:

  • At least 70 cm high
  • Base area of 50 × 50 cm
  • Side walls (except for the viewing window) should be coated with rough bark for climbing
  • There should be a 15 cm high layer on the terrarium floor for possible egg laying
  • A lot of branches and a lot of plants as a climbing opportunity
  • Spray the terrarium twice a day with water
  • Daytime temperature between 25 and 27 ° C, room temperature at night

behavior

C. boettgeri is known as a lively species, which means that it constantly walks through the terrarium in search of food during the day. When it encounters another C. boettgeri chameleon, it sends a warning in the form of hissing sounds and raises its occipital lobes. If this threatening gesture is unsuccessful, the argument can quickly turn into a bite.

Courtship, mating and oviposition

During courtship, the male nods to the female in greeting. Then it takes on a courtship color and approaches quite quickly. If the female is not ready to mate, it also changes its color and repels the male by hissing or biting. When ready, the female lets the male come over and mating occurs. The male wraps around the female and both animals place their cloacal openings on top of each other. After 10–30 minutes, the male leaves the female. Storage takes place after 45 days. The female buries the clutch of up to 4 eggs. For successful offspring, the eggs should be removed from the terrarium immediately after they have been placed and placed in damp vermiculite . At 23 ° C the young hatch after about three months. Then the rearing takes place in small terrariums.

Lining

Crickets and crickets are gladly taken, and flies and moths are not spurned as long as the food animals are not too big. The water requirement is covered by the spray water.
