description

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 22 to 32 millimeters. The upper side of the forewings is brown and has a slightly metallic bluish shimmering dust, while the rear wings, which are also brown, show a somewhat more pronounced metallic bluish shimmering dust. The undersides of all wings are gray-brown in color and have a narrow orange-red band in the post-disk region , which is partially jagged on the hind wings. Towards the outer edge, this band is delimited by a very thin black and a directly adjoining white line. In the submarginal region there are several eye spots, with a large one, half black and half orange-red, protruding conspicuously. There are two tails near the anal angle .

egg

The whitish eggs have many small depressions and are placed individually in shady places on the floor.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars have a brown color, two blackish side ridge lines and some long black hairs. At the end of the body there are two small black spots that resemble eyes and are obviously intended to confuse and deter predators. At times, worried caterpillars have been observed walking backwards.

Doll

The dolls are either pure ocher or also show various black spots.

Similar species

In Calycopis cecrops , the large, dark eye-spot on the underside of the hind wings is almost monochrome black and the orange-red post disk band is relatively wide.

distribution and habitat

Calycopis isobeon occurs in the southern states of the USA and in Central America . The species prefers to live in open, dry bush landscapes.

Way of life

The moths form several successive generations without interruption. Adult caterpillars feed polyphagous , mostly on withered leaves or fallen fruit.
