Arthur Gardiner Butler (born June 27, 1844 in London , † May 28, 1925 in Beckenham , Kent ) was a British entomologist, arachnologist and ornithologist who worked for the British Museum on the systematics of birds, insects and spiders for a long time .

Live and act

Arthur Gardiner Butler grew up on Cheyne Walk in the Chelsea borough of London. He was the son of Thomas Butler, an employee of the British Museum who in 1857 became assistant secretary to Antonio Panizzi , director of the British Museum's library. Butler was trained at St Paul's School . He later took a year of art classes at the Art School in South Kensington . From 1863 until his health deteriorated in 1901, he worked for the British Museum. In 1879 he became assistant curator of the arthropod department and in 1895 of the insect department. In recognition of his entomological work, Butler received an honorary doctorate from the Western University of Pennsylvania in 1893 . In addition to several entomological works, Butler has published books on birds (particularly on oology and aviculture ) and he wrote for the magazine The Feathered World . In his archaeological works he dealt with the arachnofauna of Australia , the Galápagos Islands and Madagascar .

Butler was a member of the Royal Entomological Society , the Linnean Society of London , the Zoological Society of London and the British Ornithologists' Union .
