Cambuskenneth ( gäl . : Camas Sgeanail ) is a district of Stirling in the Central Lowlands of Scotland and is home to the ruins of Cambuskenneth Abbey .

General

About 250 people live in the village on the Forth . Cambuskenneth can only be reached via Ladysneuk Road from Alloa Road in Causewayhead . In 1935 a footbridge was built across the river leading to the neighboring district. Previously, the neighboring bank could only be reached by ferry.

The village is where there was once an orchard. The village pub, the Abbey Inn, is on the corner of North Street. Next to the bridge is the village hall, which also functions as the town hall, and across from it is the park, which includes a playground and a small soccer field.

history

Cambuskenneth may be named after Kenneth MacAlpin , who defeated the Picts at the Battle of Logie in the ninth century. Cambuskenneth was first documented in a charter of King David in 1140; In 1147 he built the Augustinian Abbey of Cambuskenneth. In 1297 the Battle of Stirling Bridge , in which William Wallace defeated the English invading army, took place here.
