Camille Stamaty

Camille-Marie Stamaty (born March 23, 1811 in Rome , † April 19, 1870 in Paris ) was a French pianist and composer .

Life

Stamaty, the son of Greek-Italian parents, studied with Friedrich Kalkbrenner in Paris from 1830 and was considered his best student. From him he adopted the technique of playing the piano from the strength of the fingers (instead of the forearm), which he later taught himself. He also studied with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in Leipzig in 1836. He was one of the six pianists who performed the version for six pianos of Friedrich Kalkbrenner's Grande Polonaise in Frédéric Chopin's first concert in Paris (February 25, 1832, Salons Pleyel, 9 rue Cadet) précédée d'une Introduction et d'une Marche op.90.

From 1837 Stamaty was professor of piano in Paris. His own pianist career was mixed due to rheumatic complaints. His numerous students include Camille Saint-Saëns and Louis Moreau Gottschalk .

Stamaty's compositions, many for piano, are mostly forgotten. Some of his practice works for piano stayed in print, especially Le Rythme des doigts: exercises types à l'aide du métronome , op 36.
