Camilo Egas trained as a painter at the "School of Fine Arts" in Quito and at the Royal Academies of Rome and Asia as well as San Fernando in Madrid and Colarroisse in Paris. After his return from Europe, he intended to settle in Ecuador and paint forerunners of indigenism. From 1937 until his death, however, he settled in New York. Between 1935 and 1962 he was the director of the School of Painting at the New School for Social Research , New York.

In April 1926 he founded the avant-garde magazine Hélice , which appeared between April and September of the same year.

In the late 1970s, the Central Bank of Ecuador made a house available for the Camilo Egas Museum to be set up. The museum is housed in a 17th century mansion that has recently been restored and is within walking distance of the basilica. It is run by the Ministerio de Cultura y Patrimonio , Ecuador. The permanent exhibition shows the various stages in which Camilo Egas, one of the most versatile artists of the time in Ecuador, worked. Admission is free.
