Camp bastion

Camp Bastion is a large military camp of the Afghan National Army in Afghanistan northwest of Laschkar Gah . It was originally built by the United Kingdom's armed forces . It was created in 2006 and covers an area of ​​four miles in length and two miles in width. Several thousand British soldiers were stationed there. There is a field hospital and its own large airfield . Within Camp Bastion, there are the formerly US field camp Camp Barber and the former Danish camp Viking. In the neighborhood there is also the nearly 3 square mile former US-American field camp Camp Leatherneck and the field camp Camp Shorabak. Camp Shorabak was set up for the Afghan National Army, the remaining camps were handed over to the Afghan National Army during the withdrawal of the foreign forces.

The camp was also the headquarters of the British-led multinational Provincial Reconstruction Team since May 2006 . In addition to the British, representatives from the USA, Denmark and Estonia also take part in the PRT Laschkar Gah. It included about 250 people.

The camp was attacked several times. In the September 14, 2012 raid, two US Marines died and six Harrier II fighter jets were destroyed and two others were seriously damaged. On October 1, 2013, the two major generals Charles Gurganus and Gregg Sturdevant were dismissed from service because they had not taken adequate precautions to protect the camp. It was the first generals fired for fighting errors since the Vietnam War .

In 2014, the withdrawal of the foreign armed forces took place. Following the formal handover of the entire base to the Afghan National Army, the last British soldiers left the base on October 27, 2014.

On November 28, 2014, the camp was attacked by Taliban fighters. Eight Afghan soldiers died during the hours of fighting. A few days later, a video of the Taliban emerged showing the preparations and the attack.
