Campanula saxatilis is a plant from the genus of bellflowers ( Campanula ) in the family of bell flower plants (Campanulaceae).

description

Campanula saxatilis is a perennial plant that forms a thick rhizome as a perennial organ. The upright or ascending stems are up to 20 cm high. They are very pliable and fragile and can be simple or branched. The basal leaves are arranged in rosettes, spatulate to inverted-lanceolate , stalked, leathery and bald or sparsely hairy. The leaf margin is notched-serrated or entire. The stem leaves are built similarly, but the uppermost are sessile .

The flowers are too few in a short inflorescence. The calyx has pointed calyx teeth with only very short appendages between them. The crown is (10 to) 14 to 19 (to 23) mm long, tubular and velvety hairy with upright-protruding corolla lobes .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.

Occurrence

Campanula saxatilis occurs on islands in the southern Aegean and grows in crevices of limestone cliffs .

Systematics

Campanula saxatilis was first described by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum in 1753 . This species is divided into two geographically separate subspecies:

  • Campanula saxatilis L. subsp. saxatilis . The basal sheets are mostly spatulate. The crown is narrowly tubular. The calyx teeth are triangular-lanceolate. This nominotypical subspecies is endemic to western Crete .
  • Campanula saxatilis subsp. cytherea Rech.f. & Phitos . The basal leaves are mostly lanceolate. The crown is broadly tubular. The calyx teeth are almost obovate. This subspecies is endemic to the two islands of Kythira and Antikythira .
