The prickly pearfish (Campephagidae) are a species-rich family in the order of the passerine birds (Passeriformes). There are six genera and over 80 species in this family.
The name Stachelbürzler is derived from the peculiar formation of the plumage on the back and the rump. This formation is absent in the genus red pennies. The shafts of the erectable feathers are sharply pointed towards the tip and thus act like a thorn. Since the feathers can be easily detached from the skin, it is believed that they are used for defense against predators.
Stingboobs are usually colored on the upper side inconspicuously gray to light brown to black. They resemble the stranglers and cuckoos in their plumage color and physique , but are not related to them. The red pennies have a more colorful plumage. The males are dominated by black, red, orange and yellow, the females are more dull in color.
The distribution area is in the subtropical and tropical forests in Africa , Asia and Australasia . The medium-sized, sociable prickly paws are location-faithful birds that only roam in a limited area. An exception is the gray niggas, which penetrates as a migratory bird into areas in Japan and Siberia . The cup-shaped nests are placed in forks on the trees. The clutches include two to five spotted eggs, which are colored differently depending on the species, white to bluish to greenish.
The preferred food is caterpillars that are picked from the leaves. Some species catch insects in flight.
